No Respect Like Self-Respect

I care for myself. The more solitary, the more friendless, the more unsustained I am, the more I will respect myself.” ~ Charlotte Brontë in Jane Eyre

Today would have been Charlotte Brontë’s 198th birthday, and in honor of the day, a quote from one of my favorite books of all time.

A confession: I was actually out of school for years, an English professor for well over a decade before I read Jane Eyre. If you’ve never read it, please do. Jane is “little” and “insignificant” in society, but she knows, deep in her heart, that she is the equal to any in the land. She knows that in God’s eyes, all are equal.

Jane’s story is a wonderful lesson for those of us who don’t care about ourselves enough. The less we have other people, the more we need to respect and care for ourselves.
