Deep peace of the running wave to you
Deep peace of the flowing air to you
Deep peace of the quiet earth to you
Deep peace of the shining stars to you
Deep peace of the Infinite peace to you
One of my all-time favorite blessings on you all on the St. Patrick’s Day. Although I see myself as a citizen of the world, there are some things I can’t escape, don’t want to escape on many levels, and that’s my heritage. I am Irish-American, and growing up this was an important day for my family.
Many of my older relatives carried a lot of anger because of the anti-Irish sentiments in New York in their younger days. So a day to be proud of our heritage was a time to wear the green and celebrate family and faith. Those relatives are all gone now, but they live on in my heart.
I’m not a big one for the drinking hoopla and foolishness that today has evolved into, but tonight as my son and I tuck into our corned beef and cabbage, they will be in my mind. I have only been able to accomplish what I have in my life because of the struggles of those ancestors who came here and fought for dignity and equality. Today is the day to remember them and that.
