The Most Difficult Virtue

“Patience is bitter, but its fruit is sweet.” ~ Jean-Jacques Rousseau

When life is throwing obstacles in my way, I find patience to be the hardest thing to hold on to. I do believe that things will eventually work out (the plight of the eternal optimist), but it’s the slogging through the hard bits that try my patience so.

It’s especially trying when others are not cooperating.  I find struggling against bureaucracy is the worst because it’s nameless, faceless, and conscienceless, and the real live humans who work for it hide behind its walls.  The world is in a sad place, and this, above all, tries my patience.  Others may have their own bugbear, but this is mine.

So grant me the patience, please, and in the words of that time-honored prayer, grant it to me now!
