“Affection is responsible for nine-tenths of whatever solid and durable happiness there is in our lives.” ~ CS Lewis
I am having a very very happy day today. Why? Because I’m surrounded by affection. There’s a reason–it’s my birthday–and thanks to social media, one person posts on my wall (I don’t list it on birthdays), someone else sees it, and then I get a wall full of greetings! I’ve gotten cards and messages from family members and close friends, and in spite of a cold and three stacks of papers to grade, my cup of joy runneth over.
Social media really is a blessing. I remember birthdays of the past when only my immediate family sent wishes. I was happy, but Lewis is right. Affection does make us happier than anything else, and a simple “happy birthday,” being thought of if only for a few minutes, makes my day more joyful.
I’m not actually writing this to fish for greetings. But I do want to encourage people to remember how important human contact and affection is for people. Reach out and say hello to someone, remember a birthday even if you haven’t acknowledged it for years. If you’d like to give me a birthday gift, please tell someone you’re thinking of them, you miss them, you love them. I don’t need to know–but knowing that someone is spreading happiness is one of the best gifts I can receive.
