Fake it Till you Make it

“We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful what we pretend to be.” ~ Kurt Vonnegut

One of the things I constantly tell my students is: fake it till you make it. You want to be a good student? Act like the good students you know.  Vonnegut is saying the same thing, more or less, and basically this has been how I’ve gotten as far as I have.

I pretend to be brave when I’m not, and suddenly I’m doing the brave thing. I pretend to be calm a lot of the time, and patient, and understanding.  I hope I have chosen carefully.

I see people who pretend to be “hard cases” or silly or stupid (yes, people do pretend to be stupid), and that’s what they are.  I don’t think they have chosen carefully.

Vonnegut gives good advice–choose carefully.  Set your sights high and soar.
