Thoughts on Thanks

“Pride slays thanksgiving, but a humble mind is the soil out of which thanks naturally grow. A proud man is seldom a grateful man, for he never thinks he gets as much as he deserves.” ~ Henry Ward Beecher

As we edge toward Thanksgiving holiday here in the States, my mind naturally turns to thanks.

In all the political discussion about Native genocide and celebrating imperialism on the one hand and the frenzy of commercialism gearing up on the other, too many of us forget that this was set aside to be a day of simple thanks and gratitude for the gifts we have been given.  That’s sad.

Being thankful is good for us, yet I know from experience that I need a reminder far too often.  So today I post this for me and whoever else needs it.
